SEUN KUTI SURRENDERS TO POLICE FOLLOWING ASSAULT ON AN OFFICER OF THE LAW

Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti has now reportedly been detained at the Ikeja police command on Monday, 15th after turning himself in. This is swiftly following reactions from a video footage showing him assaulting a police officer on duty.

 

The IGP (Inspector-General of police), Usman Baba had on Saturday ordered for the arrest of the last son of the legendary Fela Kuti in reaction to the now-viral filmed offence. He had also ordered a speedy and full investigation on the incident amidst the singer's claim that the officer of the law threatened to kill him and his family.

The IGP while remaining adamant that no matter the err, an officer of the law is not to be assaulted also admitted that the case would be treated fairly and justly and the singer and officer (if guilty) would be prosecuted accordingly.

 

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” their released statement read.

 

On Sunday, the police raided the singer's home in Lagos but could not find him. However, his lawyer, Femi Falana had revealed that the singer would surely turn himself in the following day.

 

During the early hours of Monday, the singer surrendered himself to the police force for investigation and according to Premium Times was accompanied by a senior lawyer, Femi Falana who would reportedly represent Seun.

The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, also confirmed the information.

 

Though the official outcome of the arrest is yet to be known at the time of this report, a police source who does not want to be named because he isn’t authorized to speak revealed that Mr. Kuti is “presently being taken to the State Criminal Intelligence Department in Panti, in the Yaba area of the state".

 

In a video released on social media on Saturday, the singer and son of late Afrobeat icon, Fela Kuti, was seen hitting a police officer. The singer now faces prosecution and according to the law may be sentenced to imprisonment
