IRS to Share Immigrant Tax Data with ICE for Deportation Enforcement, Drawing Privacy Concerns
The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has entered into a controversial agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to share taxpayer data as part of immigration enforcement efforts.
This marks a significant shift in how federal agencies utilize tax information, as the new arrangement will allow ICE to verify the names and addresses of individuals suspected to be in the U.S. illegally against IRS tax records.
The agreement, signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Monday, is seen as aligning with President Donald Trump’s broader immigration enforcement agenda, which includes tightening border security and increasing deportations. Officials argue that the data-sharing initiative will bolster ICE's ability to locate and deport undocumented immigrants, coinciding with heightened federal actions such as workplace raids and the use of an 18th-century law to deport Venezuelan migrants
