Unai Emery has revealed that he shared an emotional farewell with Ollie Watkins as the Aston Villa striker prepares to leave for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Emery said Watkins apologised for making himself unavailable for Villa’s opening match against Brighton, admitting that he had made a mistake. The manager and his players accepted the apology. 

Despite the difficult ending, Emery praised Watkins as a “wonderful person” and said one mistake could not erase everything the striker had contributed to Villa.

The farewell ended with a big hug and a small tear from Emery. ???????? 

Watkins leaves Aston Villa as the club’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, having scored 91 league goals for the club.
