“WE ARE STANDING FIRM” — MADURO SHARES PHOTOS FROM US DETENTION ????????????????

Former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has shared photographs appearing to show him inside a New York detention facility, saying he and his wife are “standing firm” despite being in US custody.

The photos were posted on social media on Sunday, although the images appear to have been taken on June 25. Maduro is seen wearing a grey tracksuit and raising his hands in a peace/victory gesture.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured during a US military operation in Venezuela in January and are facing US charges related to alleged narco-terrorism and cocaine importation. Both have pleaded not guilty.

In his message, Maduro told supporters that they remained strong and confident, adding that “Venezuela will rise again.”

The release of the photographs has also raised questions online about how and when the images were taken and subsequently published, particularly because the photos surfaced more than two months after their apparent June date. 

Maduro may be behind bars, but his message is clear: he says he is not backing down.
