CNN spoke with three mothers who say social media played a role in their children’s deaths, as Meta reaches an $18 billion settlement with multiple US states over allegations that its platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive and contributed to harm among young people.

As part of the settlement, Meta has agreed to make major changes to Facebook and Instagram, while an independent auditor will assess how the company implements those changes.

The mothers’ stories are reigniting a difficult conversation about social media addiction, children’s mental health and the responsibility of technology companies to protect young users.
