North West Records Highest Crime Incidence in Nigeria, Southeast the Lowest
The Federal Government has announced that the North West region of Nigeria recorded the highest incidence of crime, while the Southeast had the lowest, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This data is part of the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) and reflects the administration of President Bola Tinubu's commitment to a data-driven socio-economic agenda.
In a statement by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, the NBS data revealed significant crime statistics across various regions. The North West accounted for 14 million crime incidents, followed by the North Central with 8.8 million incidents. Other regions reported the following figures: South West with 6.9 million incidents, South South with 7.7 million, North East with 7.9 million, and the South East with the lowest incidence at 6.1 million.
Bwala emphasized that the report highlights the administration's efforts to tackle security challenges in the country. He noted a significant decrease in crime rates compared to 2023, citing improved collaboration among military, paramilitary, and private sector entities. The report serves as evidence of the renewed synergy in addressing security issues across Nigeria.
Furthermore, the report indicates a reduction in kidnapping incidents in the South and armed banditry in the North West. The activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its affiliated group, the Eastern Security Network, have also diminished, particularly following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, who had instigated violence in the Southeast
