NAFDAC Shuts Down 150 Shops in Aba for Selling Counterfeit Goods

The National Drug Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, during a two-day operation on December 16 and 17, 2024. This action was taken in response to the discovery of large-scale production and distribution of fake and expired goods.

The operation revealed a concerning array of counterfeit products, including beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yogurt. The total value of the destroyed items was estimated at ₦5 billion, highlighting the magnitude of the illegal activities occurring in the market.

Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the Director of the South-East Zone, described Eziukwu Market as a hub for counterfeit and substandard products. He expressed dismay at the ongoing illegal activities, particularly given that market leaders had previously signed an undertaking in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters. This breach of trust underscores the challenges NAFDAC faces in combatting these practices.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, reaffirmed the Agency's zero tolerance for counterfeit goods. She emphasized NAFDAC's unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and working towards a permanent solution to the persistent problem of counterfeit products in the market.
