Lagos State Government Pledges Reforms After 45.7% Pass Rate in 2024 WASSCE
The Lagos State Government has expressed concern over the performance of students in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), revealing that only 45.7% of students passed, while 54.3%, equivalent to 31,596 students, did not meet the required standards.
During a media briefing to mark Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second year in office for his second term, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, acknowledged the decline in results and assured that reforms were underway to improve future exam performances.
The state invested N1.577 billion to cover the WASSCE fees for 58,188 students who participated in the 2024 examination. To enhance transparency and prevent misuse of resources, Lagos introduced biometric and image registration for all final-year students, ensuring only eligible candidates received government sponsorship.
