WAEC Candidates in South-East Face Uncertainty as IPOB Orders May 30 Sit-at-Home
WAEC candidates in the South-East are expressing concern as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a total sit-at-home order for May 30, 2025.
The move, aimed at commemorating fallen Biafran heroes, could disrupt the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), raising fears that students might miss or need to reschedule their exams.
In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB declared May 30 a public holiday across the South-East to mark this year's Biafra Heroes Memorial Day. The lockdown, which takes place every year in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Biafran struggle, will require residents to stay indoors between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
"Starting May 1, IPOB launched awareness campaigns through Radio Biafra and other media outlets," the statement read. "There will also be memorial lectures and global observances by our members, with the May 30 lockdown being the central event to honour our heroes and heroines.
