State Governors Propose ₦21.9 Trillion Budget for 2025
Out of Nigeria's 36 governors, 32 have submitted a combined proposal of ₦21.9 trillion for the 2025 budget to their respective state assemblies. This figure represents a significant 31% increase from the 2024 budgets, which totaled ₦16.15 trillion. The proposed budgets highlight the governors' commitment to addressing various developmental needs across the country as they prepare for the upcoming fiscal year.
The budget breakdown reveals regional allocations that reflect the diverse needs of the states. The South West leads with a proposal of ₦6.15 trillion, followed by the North West at ₦3.78 trillion and the South South at ₦3.68 trillion. Other regions include the North Central with ₦3.18 trillion, the South East at ₦2.72 trillion, and the North East with ₦2.38 trillion. This distribution underscores the varying priorities and challenges faced by different regions.
In terms of expenditure, the proposed budgets allocate ₦13.74 trillion for recurrent spending and ₦7.42 trillion for capital spending. This allocation aims to enhance service delivery while also investing in infrastructure and development projects across the states. The emphasis on capital expenditure is crucial for stimulating economic growth and improving living conditions for citizens.
Among the individual state budgets, Lagos stands out with a proposal of ₦3 trillion, making it the highest among the states. Following Lagos are Niger at ₦1.2 trillion and Ogun at ₦1.05 trillion. Conversely, the states with the least proposed budgets include Yobe with ₦320.8 billion, Gombe at ₦320.1 billion, and Adamawa with ₦268.8 billion. Notably, the budgets for Imo, Kebbi, Kwara, and Rivers are still pending announcement, adding further anticipation to the overall budgetary landscape
