“They Can’t Embarrass Me” — Cardinal Onaiyekan Fires Back at Presidency
“They Can’t Embarrass Me” — Cardinal Onaiyekan Fires Back at Presidency ????????
Catholic Cardinal John Onaiyekan has responded to criticism from the Presidency following his recent comments after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking in an interview, the 82-year-old cleric said he had no reason to feel embarrassed by what he said, insisting that he was speaking honestly and not trying to please the government or anyone else.
“I cannot be embarrassed. I’m 82 years old. Nobody can embarrass me.”
Onaiyekan also said he was not afraid of arrest or intimidation, stressing that Nigerians should not take the ability to speak openly about issues affecting the country for granted.
He explained that his comments reflected concerns shared by fellow bishops and said religious leaders across different faiths are also experiencing the impact of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
“When it comes to what is happening to Nigeria, the poverty, the suffering, we are all in the same boat now,” he said.
The Cardinal’s remarks come amid an ongoing debate over the country’s economic hardship and the responsibility of religious and political leaders to speak openly about the challenges facing Nigerians.
Cousins, do you agree with Cardinal Onaiyekan that religious leaders should speak openly about the country’s problems, regardless of who is in power
