“Chidimma, Go Home” — Protesters March Outside Court in South Africa ????????????????
South Africans gathered outside the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday, August 19, calling for Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina to leave the country as her legal battle over her immigration status continues.
Supporters of the March and March movement reportedly sang and chanted outside the court, with some carrying banners accusing Adetshina of being an illegal immigrant. One banner read: “She claimed Nigeria and was crowned Ms Nigeria.”
The controversy surrounding Chidimma dates back to the 2024 Miss South Africa competition, where her nationality and family background became the subject of intense public debate. She eventually withdrew from the competition before later entering and winning Miss Universe Nigeria, going on to represent Nigeria internationally.
Adetshina was arrested in June 2026 after South African authorities alleged that she had entered the country through the Lebombo border from Mozambique despite previously being declared a prohibited person.
Her legal team has challenged the government’s position and is opposing her detention pending possible deportation. The Cape Town Regional Court was expected to deliver a ruling on Wednesday, but the decision was postponed.
The case continues to attract strong reactions in both South Africa and Nigeria, particularly because of the long-running debate over citizenship, identity and immigration status surrounding Chidimma. ????????????????
What do you think, cousins — should this be treated strictly as an immigration/legal matter, or has the controversy become unnecessarily personal
