Guidelines for Successful Breastfeeding
*Position and Attachment:*
- Hold the baby close, ensuring the head and body are in a straight line.
- The baby's mouth should be wide open, with the chin touching the breast and the lower lip curled downwards.
- More of the areola (the dark area) should be visible above the baby's mouth than below.
*Feeding Routine:*
- Feed from both breasts for at least 10 minutes each, alternating which breast is offered first.
- If the baby falls asleep while feeding, gently press the area in front of the ear to wake them.
- Aim to feed about 8 to 10 times in 24 hours on demand.
*Signs of Adequate Feeding:*
- The baby should pass urine at least 6 times in 24 hours, indicating they are getting enough milk.
- A weight gain of at least 0.5 kg in a month suggests sufficient nutrition.
*Exclusive Breastfeeding:*
- Breastfeeding should be exclusive for the first 6 months, with no water or bottle feeding.
- Introducing a bottle can lead to "nipple confusion," causing the baby to refuse breast milk.
*Nutrition and Self-Care:*
- Maintain a balanced diet with sufficient vitamins, iron, and calcium supplements.
- Take time to relax and consider napping in the afternoon.
*If Milk Supply is Low:*
- If you feel your milk supply is insufficient, consider taking Maxolon: one tablet three times a day for 14 days.
