Goodluck Jonathan Condemns Suspension of Rivers State Officials, Says It Damages Nigeria’s Image
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has criticized the recent suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other elected officials, stating that it tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
Jonathan made this statement while serving as the Chairman of the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, March 22.
“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” he said.
The former president acknowledged that it is uncommon for past leaders to comment on current political issues to avoid escalating tensions. However, he said he was compelled to speak due to persistent calls from Nigerians urging him to address the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.
Jonathan emphasized that a country's image and its ability to attract investments depend heavily on the integrity and stability of its executive, legislative, and judicial institutions.
He also criticized the growing influence of individuals over the judiciary, warning that such interference erodes public trust in the rule of law.
The controversy follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, March 18, amid a prolonged political crisis.
