Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Welcomes Over 3,000 New Members to APC in Abia State
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has announced the successful defection of more than 3,000 new members from various political parties into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State. This significant event took place in Akwete, Ndoki, during an empowerment program hosted by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, the representative for the Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency.
Addressing an enthusiastic crowd proudly displaying the APC’s distinctive broom emblem, Kalu expressed optimism about a forthcoming wave of defections to the party. He underscored that this influx of new members reflects the citizens' appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to the advancement of the Igbo community, particularly through the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
Kalu stated, "The President has tried for Ndigbo. He is still trying for Ndigbo. He is the only man that remembered Ndigbo after 54 years that a promise of reconstruction, reconciliation, and rehabilitation was made." He praised Tinubu for his leadership and dedication to development, emphasizing the importance of grassroots engagement in politics.
The Deputy Speaker welcomed the new members, saying, "For taking this decision to join APC, it shall be well with you. APC has come closer to the people." He highlighted the significance of the defections, noting that the departure of notable figures from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) signifies a shift in political dynamics.
Kalu, who was honored with the chieftaincy title of "Enyioha of Ukwa Kingdom," urged the community to continue supporting President Tinubu’s government, assuring that the people of Ukwa East and Ukwa West, as well as the broader Igbo land, will benefit from increased democratic dividends.
Among the notable defectors was Hon. Emeka Stanley, the former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and former member of the House of Representatives, further solidifying the APC's growing influence in the region.
