Tragic Clash at Football Match in Guinea Leaves Dozens Dead
A violent clash between football fans during a match in Guinea has reportedly resulted in the deaths of around 100 people. Local hospitals are struggling to cope with the overwhelming number of casualties, with morgues filled to capacity and bodies spilling into hallways. The incident occurred during a tournament organized in honor of Guinea's military junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, who took power in a 2021 coup and has since established himself as president. Eyewitnesses stated that the chaos erupted following a disputed decision by the referee, leading fans to invade the pitch. As tensions escalated, some demonstrators vandalized and set fire to a police station. Unverified videos circulating on social media reportedly show scenes of chaos outside the stadium, with numerous bodies visible on the ground. A local doctor, speaking anonymously, described the harrowing scene at the hospital: "There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see in the hospital. Others are lying on the floor in the hallways. The morgue is full." He confirmed the death toll at around 100, while another doctor cited "dozens of dead." Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah expressed condolences, stating, "The government deplores the incidents that marred the football match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams this afternoon in Nzerekore. During the stampede, victims were recorded." An opposition group has also reported that dozens of individuals were killed in the crush and criticized the authorities for their role in the tragedy. The National Alliance for Change and Democracy stated that the government bears "significant responsibility for these grave events
