Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Farmer Who Resisted Attack by Fulani Herdsman
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the death sentence of Mr. Sunday Jackson, a farmer from Adamawa State, for killing a Fulani herdsman in what many believe was an act of self-defense.
The ruling has sparked public outrage, with supporters calling for clemency, arguing that Jackson’s actions were driven by survival instincts.
The incident dates back to 2014 when Jackson was working on his farm and was allegedly attacked by a Fulani herdsman wielding a knife. Court documents reveal that Jackson sustained injuries to his legs during the assault but managed to overpower his attacker, seize the knife, and stab him in the struggle. The herdsman later died from his wounds.
Despite spending seven years in prison, Jackson was sentenced to death by hanging in 2021 by the Adamawa High Court in Yola.
