Senate Erupts in Shouting Match Over Motion to Honor Late NEC Chairman Humphrey Nwosu
A heated argument broke out in the Senate this morning, March 26, as lawmakers debated a motion to posthumously honor the late Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC).
The clash stemmed from differing views on whether Nwosu should receive a national honor for conducting the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was later annulled. The motion followed a recent call by INEC Chairman Yakubu Mahmood, who urged the government to recognize Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s electoral history.
The debate quickly turned chaotic, with senators raising their voices in disagreement. Some argued that Nwosu deserved recognition for overseeing one of Nigeria’s most credible elections, while others questioned the timing and necessity of the honor.
Despite the heated exchange, the Senate is expected to continue discussions on the matter.
