Oluremi Tinubu Weighs in on Akpabio’s S£xual Harassment Allegations
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has spoken on the s£xual harassment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, expressing confidence that the Senate is handling the issue appropriately.
The controversy began on February 20, 2025, when a heated exchange over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber escalated into a serious accusation. Akpoti-Uduaghan later claimed that her challenges in the Senate started after she allegedly rejected Akpabio’s advances. She subsequently submitted a petition against him, but the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed it, citing due process concerns.
Reacting to the issue, Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the need for decorum and self-respect in the legislative chamber. She stated:
> "I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may say, why am I not taking a position? I believe the Senate is doing what is needful because that's what it is."
She further added that such issues should not arise in a “matured chamber” like the Senate, urging women to assert themselves in professional spaces:
> "Women, raise yourself, don't be in a position that men will be talking to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start."
