EFCC Investigates Nigeria Sports Commission Over Fund Misappropriation Allegations
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating allegations of misconduct and misappropriation of funds within the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC). This inquiry focuses particularly on financial irregularities related to the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The investigation has gained attention due to concerns about the management of funds associated with these significant sporting events. In a letter dated November 28 and obtained by TheCable, the EFCC formally requested a comprehensive list of all sponsors linked to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Professional Football League from 2022 to the present. The agency underscored the importance of this information in assessing allegations of abuse of office and the diversion of public funds. The letter indicates that the need for transparency and accountability in the financial dealings of sports organizations is paramount. The EFCC's request includes specific details regarding several key areas. They seek information on the amounts donated to the NSC, along with the corresponding bank accounts where these funds were deposited. The commission also requests details of financial releases made to the NFF for the execution of major football tournaments beyond standard budget allocations. Additionally, they are asking for information on donations received from FIFA for the Super Falcons' preparation for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, as well as contributions from CAF for Nigeria’s participation in the 2023 AFCON final. Moreover, the EFCC is interested in identifying companies appointed as consultants for the NFF and the Professional Football League, along with any additional information that may assist in their investigation
