APC Dismisses Concerns Over Kwankwaso, Duke, and Obasanjo Meeting

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns surrounding the recent meeting between Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The trio reportedly engaged in discussions about Nigeria's political future behind closed doors, fueling speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting comes as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, advocates for President Bola Tinubu's re-election, asserting that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.” While opposition parties express their intentions to unseat the APC, the ruling party remains unperturbed.

Kwankwaso, Duke, and their associates met with Obasanjo, who has been a vocal critic of Tinubu’s administration, condemning issues such as alleged corruption and Nigeria’s rising debt. After the meeting, Kwankwaso shared his reflections on Facebook, noting the significance of their discussions on national issues and governance.

However, Bala Ibrahim, the National Publicity Director of the APC, characterized the meeting as inconsequential to Tinubu’s government. He emphasized that despite holding Obasanjo in high esteem, Tinubu is significantly ahead in contemporary Nigerian politics. Ibrahim stated, “The combination of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke does not present a threat to Tinubu.”

Ibrahim also pointed out Obasanjo’s history of supporting unsuccessful candidates, recalling past endorsements that did not yield electoral success. He concluded that no matter how many meetings they hold, these figures pose no threat to the APC's governance, reaffirming confidence in Tinubu's leadership as political maneuvers continue to unfold.
