NDLEA Thwarts Major Drug Smuggling Attempts at Kano and Lagos Airports
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully foiled attempts by two individuals to smuggle large quantities of illegal drugs into Nigeria.
On December 15, 2024, Olisaka Chibuzo Calistus, an import and export businessman, was apprehended at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) with 256 wraps of cocaine weighing 6 kilograms. This seizure marks the largest cocaine interception at the Kano airport since the establishment of the NDLEA Command in 2006. The drugs were discovered during body screening of passengers arriving on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 941 from Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
In a separate incident, Olanrewaju Bada Akorede, an ex-convict, attempted to export a consignment of rohypnol to South Africa through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. His shipment, hidden among gari, shoes, and men's singlets, was intercepted by NDLEA officers. Olanrewaju had previously been convicted for drug trafficking earlier this year, serving a two-year sentence before returning to commit another crime
