Labour Party Plans Legal Action Against Defecting House Members
The Labour Party (LP) has announced its intention to initiate legal proceedings against four members of the House of Representatives who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement follows a public disclosure by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas regarding the departure of several lawmakers, specifically Chinedu Okere, Mathew Donatus, Akiba Bassey, and Esosa Iyawe. These representatives cited an "internal crisis" within the LP as their reason for leaving. In a statement, LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh emphasized that while the party leadership remains resilient in the face of these defections, it will not overlook the situation. The party has instructed its legal team to pursue action against the defectors and to begin the process of reclaiming their mandates in accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the amended 2022 Electoral Act. Ifoh asserted, "There is absolute peace in the Labour Party. Therefore, no one elected on the ticket of the Labour Party has the constitutional protection to decamp from the party along with the party’s mandate." This statement underscores the LP's commitment to maintaining its integrity and addressing what it perceives as a violation of electoral principles.
