Emir of Kano Advocates Against Domestic Violence at National Dialogue Conference

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has made a powerful statement against domestic violence, emphasizing the importance of teaching both daughters and sons about the unacceptability of such behavior.

Speaking at the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention from an Islamic perspective, the emir highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that wife beating and domestic violence account for 45 percent of cases in nine Shari'a Courts in Kano over the past five years.

Emir Sanusi stated that he advises his daughters that if their husbands slap them, they should respond in kind. "If you come home and tell me your husband slapped you without slapping him back first, I will slap you myself because I did not send my daughter to marry someone who can slap her," he asserted. He stressed that any form of violence against women is prohibited and constitutes a crime, highlighting that it is "haram" (forbidden) in Islam.

The emir urged the need for a cultural shift, stating, "We must teach our daughters not to take it and also teach our sons that it is not allowed to happen." He emphasized that violence against any human being violates their dignity and must be actively addressed
