PENGASSAN Confirms Port Harcourt Refinery is Operational
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has confirmed that the Port Harcourt refinery, with a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, is now operational. The refinery is currently producing various refined petroleum products, including diesel, kerosene, and petrol. During a National Executive Council Meeting held on December 3 in Abuja, PENGASSAN National President Festus Osifo addressed concerns regarding the refinery's functionality. He assured attendees that the refinery is indeed working but clarified that its operations would not necessarily lead to a reduction in petrol prices. Osifo emphasized that the current value of the naira against foreign currencies significantly impacts the pricing of refined products. He stated, "The confirmation I have today is that the refinery is working. However, I need to explain the refining process. First, we appreciate Nigerians for holding the government accountable, as we must ensure the workability of our assets. We cannot just accept everything the government tells us; we must verify it." Osifo also acknowledged the media's role in promoting government accountability regarding the refinery's progress. He added that PENGASSAN conducted checks with members working at the facility, noting that the fractional distillation unit (CDU) processes crude oil by heating it at different temperatures to produce various petroleum products
