Nigeria Ends Foreign Scholarship Programme
The Nigerian government has announced the termination of its long-running Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme, which has traditionally funded students to study abroad.
This decision, officials say, is a result of the country’s economic constraints and a strategic shift towards strengthening the domestic education system.
Minister of Education, Prof. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, confirmed the policy change in a statement, explaining that the current economic situation and limited government resources make it unsustainable to continue funding overseas education. "All the courses Nigerians typically study abroad through the BEA are now available, and often of a higher quality, within our own universities and polytechnics," Alausa stated. "It no longer makes sense to use public funds for overseas education when local alternatives are readily available."
