Nigeria’s Crude Oil Theft Drops to 5,000 Barrels Per Day, Production Rises to 1.75 Million BPD

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has announced a significant reduction in crude oil theft, with the volume of stolen crude dropping to 5,000 barrels per day (BPD). 

This decline has contributed to an increase in Nigeria’s daily oil production, which has now reached 1.75 million barrels per day (BPD) as of January 2025.

The Chief Executive of the Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, disclosed this progress during the Renewed Hope Global Town Hall Conference in Abuja, where he highlighted the key reforms and achievements of the current administration in the oil and gas sector.

On Sunday, the Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communication, Olaide Shonola, issued a press statement emphasizing that this success was made possible through a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic interventions aimed at tackling oil theft and improving security in oil-producing regions.

Komolafe noted that Nigeria’s crude oil production had previously plummeted to 1.1 million BPD in 2022 due to rampant theft and pipeline vandalism. However, with the government’s strategic interventions, production has steadily increased to 1.7 million BPD.

He stated:
"Oil theft led to a drastic drop in production to 1.1 million BPD in 2022. However, through kinetic and non-kinetic interventions, oil theft has significantly reduced to 5,000 BPD, leading to a steady production increase to 1.7 million BPD
