The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is introducing advanced AI-powered security systems at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, to replace traditional manual baggage checks.

This new system, aimed at enhancing efficiency and minimizing physical contact during screening, represents a major technological shift in Nigerian aviation security.

According to FAAN’s Director of Aviation Security Services, Afegbai Igbafe, the implementation will phase out the current customs tables. The upgraded setup will feature six monitors—one for each agency at the checkpoint—allowing officers to inspect baggage remotely and in real-time.

“The tables you see today will be history,” Igbafe said. “There will be no physical contact between officers and passengers unless a bag is flagged by the AI system.
