China has sentenced its former Sports Minister, Gou Zhongwen, to death after he was found guilty of accepting bribes totaling 240 million yuan (about $33.4 million) and abusing his official position.

According to Chinese authorities, Gou used his office to unlawfully benefit individuals and organizations in exchange for massive kickbacks, actions that prosecutors said seriously undermined state interests and public trust. 

The court ruled that the scale of the corruption and the long-term abuse of power warranted the harshest possible punishment under Chinese law.
