What Does Your Discharge Say?

  Women’s Discharge

As women, changes in discharge throughout the month can cause concern

Here’s what you need to know to differentiate between normal and abnormal discharge:

1. *Consistency*
Normal discharge can vary in consistency—from clear and slippery (around ovulation) to thicker and milky (after ovulation).

2. *Color*
Typically, normal discharge is clear or white. Slight yellowing may occur, especially if it's dried.

3. *Odor*
Normal discharge has a mild, non-offensive odor. A strong or unusual smell may be a sign of an issue.

4. *Amount*
It's normal for the amount of discharge to change throughout your menstrual cycle. Increased discharge can occur during ovulation or sexual arousal.

 Identifying Abnormal Discharge

1. *Color Changes*
   - *Yellow or Green*: May indicate an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
   - *Gray*: Often associated with bacterial vaginosis.
   - *Brown*: Could be old blood, especially at the end of your period, but if it occurs outside your cycle, consult a doctor.

2. *Consistency Changes*
   - *Cottage Cheese-like*: This may suggest a yeast infection.
   - *Foamy or Watery*: Often linked to STIs like trichomoniasis.

3. *Strong Odor*
A strong, fishy, or foul odor can indicate an infection and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

4. *Accompanying Symptoms*
If discharge is accompanied by itching, burning, or irritation, it’s important to seek medical advice.

 When to Consult a Doctor

- If you notice any significant changes in color, consistency, or odor.
- If you experience discomfort or additional symptoms like fever or abdominal pain.
- If you suspect an STI or have been exposed to one.
