TOXIC POSITIVITY: WHEN “STAY POSITIVE” DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD
TOXIC POSITIVITY: WHEN “STAY POSITIVE” DOES MORE HARM
TOXIC POSITIVITY: WHEN “STAY POSITIVE” DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD. ????????
“Others have it worse.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”
“Just stay positive.”
These words may sound encouraging, but to someone going through a difficult time, they can feel like a message to hide their pain rather than express it.
This is what people call toxic positivity — the pressure to maintain a positive attitude even when you’re hurting.
The truth is, forcing a smile doesn’t make pain disappear. Sometimes, it only teaches people to suffer in silence.
Suppressing emotions doesn’t necessarily make them go away. It can increase inner tension and leave people feeling even more isolated. On the other hand, acknowledging and putting feelings into words can help people process what they’re experiencing.
Sometimes, people don’t need advice, motivational quotes, or someone to fix everything for them. They simply need someone who will listen without judging them.
Instead of saying, “Just be positive,” try saying, “That sounds really hard. I’m here for you.”
Real support isn’t always about finding the right words to fix someone’s pain. Sometimes, it’s about making them feel safe enough to express it. ❤️????
What’s one supposedly positive phrase you hate hearing when you’re going through a difficult time? Let’s talk in the comments.
THAN GOOD
