A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 military aircraft crashed into a swampy area near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday, October 5. Initial reports described the aircraft as a helicopter, but authorities later confirmed it was a military plane with 32 people on board — 25 passengers and seven crew members.
Residents and rescue volunteers described the crash site as extremely difficult to access, with parts of the aircraft and personal belongings scattered across the waterlogged area. Human remains were also reportedly recovered from the scene.
The aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it. President Bola Tinubu has since ordered an investigation into the crash.
The tragedy has left Nigeria mourning, with reports confirming that all 32 people on board died.
