PDP Sweeps Local Government Elections in Osun State Amid Controversy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully won all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 30 local government areas (LGAs) in Osun State, following elections held on February 22.

Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), announced the results on the same day. The elections proceeded despite calls for a suspension from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, and the police.

The AGF argued that a recent ruling from the Court of Appeal in Akure, which nullified a previous judgment by the Federal High Court in Osogbo, implied that the All Progressives Congress (APC) local council chairmen, previously ousted, had been reinstated. Meanwhile, the police cited intelligence reports indicating potential security threats as a reason for their recommendation to suspend the elections.
