NAFDAC Raids Port Harcourt Markets, Uncovers Massive Fake Rice Operation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with Big Bull Rice producers, has intensified its crackdown on counterfeit rice vendors in Port Harcourt. In a series of raids across Woji, Mile 3, and Mile 1 markets, officials discovered a widespread operation involving the rebagging of substandard rice into fake branded packaging.

A major distribution hub was located in Woji, where authorities seized large quantities of empty counterfeit Big Bull Rice bags, alongside other popular brands such as Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice, and Mama Pride. A salesgirl identified as Ogechi Okafor was taken into custody during the operation.

Investigators also uncovered packaging equipment, including sealing and sewing machines, a generator, and other tools used to disguise the rice as premium brands. Speaking on the issue, NAFDAC’s Rivers State Coordinator, Pharm. Emmanuel Onogwu, advised consumers to verify the authenticity of Big Bull Rice by checking for a distinct shiny ribbon across the threaded top, high-quality bag material, and a properly embossed logo. He warned that counterfeit rice may contain harmful substances used to enhance its appearance.

Over 120 fake bags of rice were confiscated from multiple shops and transported to the NAFDAC Zonal Office for further investigation
