Japan’s Agriculture Minister, Taku Eto, has stepped down following a public outcry over remarks he made during a time of record-high food prices. 

Eto sparked widespread anger after stating that he had "never had to buy rice" because supporters gifted him large quantities.

 His comments came at a time when many Japanese citizens are struggling with rising rice prices caused by poor harvests and increased demand from tourists.
