IBB Opens Up on Vatsa Coup: “A Deep Personal Betrayal”

Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has revealed his emotional turmoil over the failed 1985 coup attempt led by his childhood friend and long-time colleague, General Mamman Jiya Vatsa. 

In his new book, IBB describes the incident as a “deep personal betrayal,” detailing how he initially dismissed the rumors but later uncovered overwhelming evidence of Vatsa’s involvement.

According to Babangida, military intelligence first alerted him to the coup plot, but he found it hard to believe, given his close bond with Vatsa. However, investigations revealed that Vatsa had paid officers, including Lt-Col. Musa Bitiyong, to facilitate the operation, which allegedly included plans to bomb Eko Bridge, sabotage Air Force assets, and even hijack or shoot down the presidential jet.

IBB recounted how Vatsa attempted to escape from detention, further confirming suspicions. Despite their deep friendship, Babangida insisted that national security took precedence. Following a military tribunal, Vatsa and nine others were executed in March 1986.
