Federal Government Considers Shift to 12-Year Basic Education Model
The Federal Government is contemplating the discontinuation of the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) programs in favor of a new 12-year basic education model.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, announced that this proposal will be assessed during the ongoing Extraordinary National Council on Education in Abuja, which serves as the primary policymaking body.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that while the current 9-3-4 education system has its advantages, it also presents challenges, particularly the necessity for students to seek additional work to further their education. He suggested that transitioning to a 12-4 education model would better prepare students for tertiary education and align Nigeria with global educational standards.
