EFCC Arraigns Woman for Alleged N6.8 Million Romance Scam in Borno
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Catherine Ijeoma Ugwu before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri over an alleged N6.8 million romance scam.
According to the EFCC, Ugwu deceived a man named Emmanuel Ani by impersonating and pretending to be his fiancée, convincing him to send a total of N6,815,300 for her supposed upkeep.
The defendant faces a four-count charge, including obtaining by false pretenses, criminal misappropriation, and impersonation. One of the charges states that Ugwu fraudulently obtained N6,710,300 from Ani under the guise that it was for the upkeep of a woman named Chinansa, whom she falsely presented as his fiancée.
