Cameroon’s 92-Year-Old President Paul Biya Poised for Re-Election After Four Decades in Power

As Cameroon prepares for its October 2025 presidential election, President Paul Biya, the world's oldest sitting head of state, remains at the center of speculation about seeking another term at age 92.

Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982, has yet to announce his decision, but many—including a divided opposition—anticipate his candidacy. Government spokesman René Emmanuel Sadi recently stated that Biya will reveal his intentions “at the appropriate time.”

Following a highly contested 2018 election, Biya tightened his control over the country, with human rights organizations reporting increased arrests and repression of dissent.
