Why Former NEC Chairman Humphrey Nwosu Should Not Be Immortalized – Senators Oshiomhole & Adeola Share Their Reasons
A heated debate erupted in the Nigerian Senate over a motion to posthumously honor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) who conducted the June 12, 1993 presidential election,an election widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest but later annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Solomon Adeola strongly opposed the motion, arguing that:
Nwosu failed to announce the election results despite knowing that the late Moshood Abiola (MKO) had won. They claim he had the chance to stand for justice but instead bowed to military pressure, leaving the election in limbo.
