President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing the squad of the former U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others during the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

If carried out, the execution would mark the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first known military firing-squad execution since 1945, when Pvt. Eddie Slovik was executed by firing squad during World War II.

Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 after being convicted of premeditated murder and attempted murder. His execution is currently scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, although legal appeals could delay the process.

The decision has renewed debate over the use of the death penalty and firing squads in the United States.
