Power Minister Adelabu Blames Discos for Power Failures, Calls for Urgent Overhaul and Investment

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has strongly criticized electricity distribution companies (Discos) for their role in Nigeria’s persistent power supply problems, stating they remain the weakest link in the entire electricity value chain.

Speaking in Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, during a Senate Committee on Power retreat, Adelabu lamented the dismal performance of the Discos, especially those operating in Northern Nigeria.

 He revealed that in the final quarter of 2024, Northern Discos paid just 30 percent about ₦124.4 billion of their ₦408.86 billion electricity invoice, with Abuja Disco contributing the lion’s share. Southern Discos performed slightly better, remitting 67 percent of their dues, 70 percent of which came from Lagos alone.
