PDP Accuses Benue Governor of Running State Like a Catholic Parish

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of governing the state in a manner akin to a Catholic Church parish rather than a democratic government. In a statement issued by the party's State Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor, the PDP criticized Alia for undermining democratic principles and failing to uphold transparency and accountability. The statement highlighted concerns about the Alia administration's approach to governance, asserting that it has consistently ignored the core tenets of democratic leadership, including accountability and inclusiveness. The PDP claimed that critical issues in the state, such as infrastructure decay and lack of basic services, remain unaddressed while the government prioritizes projects like new government houses and universities. The party demanded that Governor Alia fulfill his campaign promises, particularly regarding the payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, noting that the state has been receiving record allocations from the Federation Allocation Account Committee. The PDP also expressed concern over the governor's inaction regarding security issues, stating, “His utter silence in the face of brutal killings of Benue citizens stands condemned.” They criticized the deteriorating security situation, which they claim has worsened under Alia’s leadership. Additionally, the party pointed out the neglect of the Benue State House of Assembly, which is reportedly operating in makeshift conditions. They described the assembly as a "lame duck" under Alia's administration, citing favoritism and a lack of support for legislative functions. The PDP emphasized that good governance is essential for development and citizen well-being, urging the governor to shift his focus from personal interests to the collective welfare of the people. They called for a recommitment to democratic ideals and pledged to hold the Alia administration accountable for its actions. The statement concluded with a strong reminder that the governor is a servant of the people, not a ruler of a parish, and urged immediate action to address the highlighted failings in governance.
