NiMet Warns of Three-Day Heavy Rainfall, Flash Flooding Likely in Southern States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning for residents of Ogun, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next three days.

The agency also predicted light to moderate rainfall in several other states, including Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, and Abia.

NiMet cautioned that the heavy rain could lead to flash flooding, especially in areas expecting moderate to intense downpours.

The agency also highlighted the potential for strong winds, which may pose risks to weak structures, trees, and masts. Residents are advised to stay away from floodwaters, as strong undercurrents could be dangerous.

In addition to these warnings, NiMet urged the public to disconnect electrical appliances to reduce the risk of electrical hazards during the rains. Drivers should exercise caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility, which could cause significant traffic disruptions.
