Economist Expresses Shock Over Trump Administration's Tariff Calculations

A prominent economist, Professor Brent Neiman from the University of Chicago, was left astounded when he discovered that President Donald Trump had based his tariff strategy on his own research, claiming that the administration had significantly overestimated the amount owed by each country.

Neiman, a former Treasury official under the Biden administration, expressed his confusion in an op-ed for the New York Times after Trump unveiled the new tariff regime during a speech last Wednesday, which Trump dubbed "Liberation Day." 

The economist's immediate reaction was to question the methodology behind the inflated tariff rates shown on the sign Trump held up, asking, "How on Earth did they calculate such huge rates?"
