Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has died at the age of 88, confirmed on Friday by Ondo State Attorney General, Kayode Ajulo.
Born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais was appointed to the Supreme Court at the young age of 43 and later served as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, marking the second-longest tenure in the nation’s history.
Following his retirement, he led the Electoral Reform Committee under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, producing a groundbreaking 2008 report that advocated for an independent electoral commission and introduced modern reforms like electronic voting and result transmission.
