NERC Sanctions 8 DisCos for Overbilling Unmetered Customers

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed sanctions on eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for overbilling unmetered customers in violation of approved energy caps between July and September 2024.

The DisCos affected by the sanctions include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola. As part of the penalty, these companies are required to pay a combined fine exceeding 628 million Naira. Furthermore, the DisCos are instructed to provide credit adjustments to the accounts of all affected customers by no later than May 15, 2025.

NERC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring regulatory compliance within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and emphasized that any breaches in billing regulations will be strictly addressed to safeguard consumer interests.
