Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Collapses Again
Nigeria experienced yet another nationwide blackout on Friday, March 7, 2025, following a major collapse of the national power grid, leaving several states, including Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, in total darkness.
The latest grid failure occurred just days after the federal government announced a "historic rise" in power generation to 6,000MW. However, reports indicate that power generation, which stood at 5,284MW on Friday morning, plummeted drastically to below 1,000MW by 2 PM, eventually dropping to a mere 803MW by 4 PM. Many power plants were yet to resume supply as of Friday evening.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) were among the first to confirm the outage, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore power.
IKEDC notified its customers, stating:
"Dear esteemed customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07/03/2025, at 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network."
