Many Nigerians Abroad Regret Relocating, Battling Depression – NiDCOM Boss, Abike Dabiri-Erewa
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that many Nigerians who relocated abroad are now struggling with regret and depression.
In a tweet on Sunday, Dabiri-Erewa disclosed that NiDCOM has been receiving distress calls from Nigerians overseas, lamenting the harsh realities of life abroad.
Her statement was in response to a tweet by UK-based lawyer Dele Olawale, who warned that immigration policies in the UK are becoming increasingly difficult, making it harder for new immigrants to settle.
Olawale had cautioned Nigerians against relocating without careful planning, stating that many are facing broken lives, financial struggles, and uncertainty. "Many people are depressed. Many lives are broken. Many families are stranded. Irreversible regret," he tweeted.
Quoting his post, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to think deeply before leaving the country, reiterating that not all that glitters is gold. "I hope this message resonates. We @nidcom_gov have been bombarded with many cases of regrets and depression," she wrote. She also shared a thought-provoking reminder: "The grass is not greener on the other side; it's greener where you nurture it."
