LASTMA Issues Warning: Eating, Drinking, or Smoking While Driving Could Lead to Jail Time

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to motorists, reminding them that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving is a punishable offense under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, LASTMA stressed that such activities are considered forms of distracted driving, which significantly endanger road safety.

The agency stated, "Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence according to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018," and highlighted the serious consequences violators could face.

Depending on the severity of the violation and the court's judgment, offenders may face penalties such as vehicle impoundment, imprisonment for up to three months, or a maximum of six months' community service.
